NYSTRS is one of the 10-largest public defined benefit pension funds in the nation based on total assets, according to the news organization Pensions & Investments. As of June 30, 2025, the System managed $154.2 billion in net assets. The well-funded defined benefit plan administered by the System provides retirement and ancillary benefits to nearly 460,000 New York State public school teachers and administrators.
Over the past 30 years, NYSTRS has paid out $161.8 billion in benefits and expenses while collecting $41.0 billion in member and employer contributions. During the same period, the System’s net assets have grown from $47.0 billion to $154.2 billion, with 85% of NYSTRS’ income generated by investment returns.
The Retirement System is among the best-funded public pension plans in the nation. The System’s estimated funded ratio is 100.2% based on the actuarial value of assets and 103.3% based on the market value of assets as of June 30, 2025.
NYSTRS is a long-term investor. As of June 30, 2025, our 10-year and 30-year rates of return were both 8.4% (net of fees).
