NYSTRS is one of the 10-largest retirement funds in the nation, managing $115.5 billion in assets. The well-funded defined benefit plan administered by the System provides retirement and ancillary benefits to over 428,000 New York State public school teachers and administrators.

Over the past 20 years, NYSTRS has paid out $94.2 billion in benefits while collecting $24.1 billion in employee and employer contributions. During the same period, the System’s net assets have grown from $65.2 billion to $115.5 billion, with 83% of NYSTRS’ income generated by investment returns.

The Retirement System is well funded. Based on the market value of assets, our funded ratio at June 30, 2016 was 98.4%. Using the actuarial value of assets, the funded ratio was 97.9%. NYSTRS is among the best-funded public pension plans in the nation.

NYSTRS manages its plan cost effectively. Overall, NYSTRS’ investment fees and expenses average 25 cents per $100 managed, as compared to 60 cents or more in fees associated with a private retirement plan such as a 401(k).

The Retirement System is a long-term investor. As of June 30, 2017, our 30-year rate of return was 8.8% and our 25-year rate of return was 8.7%.
