NYSTRS is one of the 10-largest public retirement funds in the nation, managing $132.0 billion in net assets at June 30, 2022. The well-funded defined benefit plan administered by the System provides retirement and ancillary benefits to more than 442,000 New York State public school teachers and administrators.

Over the past 30 years, NYSTRS has paid out $140.4 billion in benefits and expenses while collecting $37.1 billion in member and employer contributions. During the same period, the System’s net assets have grown from $27.9 billion to $132.0 billion, with 85% of NYSTRS’ income generated by investment returns.

The Retirement System is among the best-funded public pension plans in the nation. Based on the market value of assets, our funded ratio at June 30, 2022 was 97%. Using the actuarial value of assets, the funded ratio was 99%.

NYSTRS manages its plan cost effectively. Overall, NYSTRS’ investment fees and expenses average 26 cents per $100 managed, as compared to 60 cents or more in fees associated with a private retirement plan such as a 401(k).

The Retirement System is a long-term investor. As of June 30, 2022, our 10-year rate of return was 8.9% (net of fees) and our 30-year rate of return was 8.5% (net of fees).
