Our commitment to you continues into retirement. In addition to issuing your benefit payment each month, NYSTRS will keep you apprised of retirement issues using the publications and resources below.

Payment Information

Retirees receive their monthly benefit payment through direct deposit. The Path to Retirement: Understanding the Retirement Process, a guide for new NYSTRS retirees, explains how the System processes a member's retirement application. You can review your monthly benefit payment information online with a MyNYSTRS account.

Discovering Retirement

Soon after you retire, you will receive Discovering Retirement. This guide to the opportunities and challenges new retirees face takes a closer look at your NYSTRS benefits, and also provides important information on topics such as working in retirement, volunteering, caregiving, and relocating. 

Retiree Newsletter

Our retiree newsletter, Resource, will keep you updated on the latest legislative changes, System news, Retirement Board actions, and other retirement-related topics. It is also available in an audio version for people with visual impairments.

Returning to Work

Although returning to work in retirement may seem contradictory, rejoining the workforce has become quite common for many retirees. It's important that NYSTRS retirees be cognizant of the rules governing their return to public employment. Read the pamphlet Working in Retirement, which outlines earnings limits and their effect on a NYSTRS retirement benefit, to be sure your retirement benefit is protected.
