Members who are eligible for retirement must have ceased employment and filed a retirement application with the System before their monthly retirement allowance can begin. The application must be signed in the presence of a notary. The application may be submitted no more than 90 days before, and no later than, the date of retirement. Due to the complex nature of retirement plans and available options, we suggest that employers do not attempt to advise members on these matters. Members contemplating retirement should either contact the System for an estimate of their possible benefit or visit one of our representatives at a consultation site. Consultation schedules are printed annually and mailed to employers each summer. There are two types of retirement - service and disability - with corresponding forms for each. It is extremely important for members to complete the appropriate form when filing for retirement. Service retirees should file the Application for Retirement (RET-54), while those retiring due to disability should file the Application for Disability Retirement (RET-54.1). Both applications are mailed to employers annually as well as upon request. Requests for retirement estimates and questions regarding the completion of retirement applications should be directed to us by calling (800) 348-7298 (447-2900 if calling from the Albany area) at the extension noted below.
