Administrative Bulletin No. 2001-4

Subject:  Abandoned Accounts

To:  BOCES Superintendents                        Date:  June 2001

Each year many teachers’ memberships terminate as a result of rendering insufficient service in the public schools of New York State. When this occurs, the System makes every effort to contact the former members to advise them that their contributions on deposit with the System are refundable.

During this procedure we identify members who do not maintain a current address with the System and we are unable to process their refund. While previous efforts have included advertising the unclaimed accounts in various teacher-related publications and making the complete list available on our Web site (www.nystrs.org), there remains a large number of former members who have not claimed their refunds.

We are enclosing a copy of our most recent abandoned accounts list and ask for your assistance, where possible, in locating these former members. If you or your staff know any person(s) on the enclosed list, please encourage them to call us at (800) 348-7298, extension 6090.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
